Periods. Menstrual cycle. Aunt Flo. Crimson Tide. On the rag. Red badge of courage.
The list goes on and on! Yes, we know all the names for it but let’s talk about the stuff we thought we knew but isn’t really true!
Here are 10 myths about our period that have been debunked!
Myth #1
Period blood is different from regular blood
Period blood IS regular blood. Just because the blood is flowing from your vagina doesn’t make it something different. Menstrual blood is completely normal.
Myth #2
Tampons are not for kids or for virgins
Inserting a tampon has nothing to do with your virginity or being an adult. If you have started your period, you can use a tampon. Point, Blank, Period! (No pun intended… maybe). Just make sure you follow the instructions on how to properly insert the tampon and/or ask an adult you trust.
Myth #3
All physical activity including sex and exercise should be avoided during your period.
Believe it or not, physical activity including sex can actually ease period symptoms such as abdominal cramps and headaches. It can also serve as a mood booster.
Myth #4
You should only shower during your period.
It was once believed that sitting in hot water can stop blood which can have adverse affects on your body. Not true at all! Hot water actually stimulates blood flow which can bring relief to cramps and make you feel better.
Myth #5
Pregnancy is not possible during your period
Pregnancy is very possible during your period despite what a lot of people believe. Ovulation can start during or soon after your period ends. Once inside your body, sperm can live 3-5 days. It’s very important if you are sexually active and do not want to get pregnant to wear condoms, use birth control or abstain from sexual activity
