As parents, it's always a special moment when we get to introduce our daughters to something new - and that includes the start of her menstrual cycle! Preparing her for the beginning of her period can feel like a daunting task, but we have some tips to make it easier.
The first step is to talk to your daughter openly and calmly about her body and the changes she might experience. It's important to be as factual and straightforward as possible while still encouraging open dialogue. This helps create an open and comfortable relationship where both of you feel safe discussing sensitive topics.
Next, you'll want to make sure she has access to the supplies she needs. You can start by helping her pick out her own personalized products, so she can feel comfortable with what she's using. Also, don't forget to keep extra supplies on hand (in the car or in her bookbag) in case of any surprises!
Finally, it can help to lead by example (or find someone you trust to be that example). Show her how to properly care for her body during this time by demonstrating healthy practices. This could include proper hygiene habits such as showering regularly; mindful eating and drinking habits like avoiding caffeine and sugar; stress management techniques such as quiet meditation; and supportive self-care activities like journaling.
The start of your daughter's menstrual cycle doesn't have to be intimidating. In fact, it should be celebrated!! With a little guidance and practice, it can instead be a time of celebration and growth. And who knows? She may even look forward to this special part of being an adult woman!
